Rainbow Mermaids Turn Back Thundercats, 2-1
|
The Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids got a stellar effort from pitcher Ángel Navarro, helped Northern Virginia score a 2-1 win over the visiting Richardson City Thundercats. Navarro, now 4-1, was the winner. In 6.2 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 4, walking 4, and allowing 1 earned run. Ilie Paunescu was credited with the save for Northern Virginia, his 6th of the season.
Shohei Kiyomizu drew 1 walk in 3 plate appearances for Northern Virginia. In the bottom of the fourth, with the teams deadlocked, 1-1, Kiyomizu delivered for the Rainbow Mermaids. His run-scoring sacrifice fly put Northern Virginia on top, 2-1.
"That's the key at this level, throwing strike one," said Navarro. "Successful pitchers do it."
The Rainbow Mermaids, now 16-15, have won 5 in a row.
