Plainsmen Win, Hope to Turn around Slow Start
|
Nebraska overcame a superlative game from Jim Unknown to beat Mt. Vernon, 2-1. The Mt. Vernon pitcher took player of the game honors in a losing cause. He threw 6 innings of 3-hit ball. Gabriel Escobar was the winning pitcher. Over 5.2 innings, he allowed 1 run on 8 hits, with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. The Mt. Vernon Bulls, now 5-7, continue their sluggish start.
Macomb Township, Michigan-born Lance Antle came through in the clutch. In the bottom of the fourth, with a runner on 1st and the Plainsmen trailing 1-0, he hit a 2-run home run to right to put Nebraska on top.
"I'm proud of the boys for pulling through," said Nebraska Plainsmen manager Bill Russell. "The wins don't come easy for this team, but everyone's got an extra jump in their step after a game like this."
