Retrievers Use Late-Game Magic to Beat Hotspur
|
The Northern Virginia Retrievers faced a tough opponent in Phoenix pitcher Wes Hamm, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Chase Field by a final score of 4-3. Hamm went 8 innings and allowed 3 earned runs. Northern Virginia reliever Darren Garland got the win, raising his record to 1-0. Edgar Capello was tagged with the loss. The Northern Virginia Retrievers are off to a tough start, getting just their 7th win in 19 games.
Roberto Sánchez's hit in the top of the ninth was a game-changer. With two out, he rapped a fastball from Jaime van de Weideven for a run-scoring double. It put Northern Virginia in front, 4-3.
"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Sánchez told a Northern Virginia Herald reporter. "Sometimes we need just to relax."
