Screaming Eagles Score Late, Top Athletic Club KC Academy, 7-5

Athletic Club KC Academy first baseman José Flores was sensational. He was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, but it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. Mercer Island beat the Athletic Club KC Academy, 7-5. Flores was named the player of the game despite the loss. Mercer Island reliever Riley Herrick picked up the win to move to 1-0. Woody Lyons suffered the loss. Denis Melis earned his 3rd save in 4 tries.
Had it not been for Marcos Reyes, the results might have been different. In the bottom of the eighth inning, when the Screaming Eagles were trailing 5-4, Reyes hit a 2-run triple for Mercer Island, giving his team the lead.
"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Reyes told the Mercer Island Observer.
Mercer Island, now 11-5, has played well in the early going.
