Smith Goes Wild, But Shooters Win
|
Springfield withstood an impressive performance by San Bernardino second baseman Parker Smith to defeat the Grasshoppers, 10-9, at Field of the Grasshoppers. Smith was 3 for 3 with a double, 2 singles, and 3 walks. He scored 3 runs. The winner was Springfield reliever Roy Gartner, now 3-5. The loser was Manny Merico. Walt Cooley got the save, the 20th for him this season.
Also pitching in was Springfield designated hitter John Ennis, who hammered a 2-run home run in the top of the second. For the game, Ennis hit 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice.
"I just try to go out and give it 100 percent every game," Ennis told a local reporter after the game. "That's my mantra, and like today, it will pay off more often than not."
With the win, Springfield has a record of 38-51. San Bernardino falls to 36-53.
