The Glendale Herons got a strong performance from pitcher Salvador Torres, who stymied the Ft. Polk South offense en route to a 7-2 win at Thunder Hawks Ballpark. Torres, now 1-1, was the winner. In 7 innings, he gave up 7 hits, while striking out 4, walking 2, and allowing 1 earned run. José Peña recorded his 1st save for Glendale.
A key at-bat in the game came in the top of the third inning when the Herons sent teenager Ruud van Ineveld to the plate against Thunder Hawks hurler Jim Unknown. With runners on 1st and 2nd and a whole stadium watching, the kid controlled his nerves and delivered huge, hitting a single off a 1-0 fastball to score 1.
"I'm proud of the boys for pulling through," said Glendale Herons manager Cristo Martínez. "The wins don't come easy for this team, but everyone's got an extra jump in their step after a game like this."
The last-place Herons now have a win-loss record of 8-19.
