D.C. overcame a superlative game from Lúcio Sánchez to beat Boston, 7-5. The Boston pitcher took player of the game honors in a losing cause. He threw 5 innings of 2-hit ball. José Alaniz picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 5-3. Jeff Territt was tagged with the loss. D.C. is 31-32 and Boston, with the loss, 36-27.
Charles Mathes's hit in the top of the 12th was a game-changer. With two out, he rapped a sinker from Jeff Territt for a 2-run single. It put D.C. in front, 7-5.
"This is a resilient bunch," said D.C. manager Jonathan Gerth.
