Gwinnett County third baseman Octávio Ontiveros was sensational. He went 3-4 with 3 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once, but it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. South Beach beat the Black Cats, 10-6. Ontiveros was named the player of the game despite the loss. South Beach reliever Pete Rhue picked up the win to move to 1-0. Constantino Kent suffered the loss. The Blaze now own a record of 44-31.

A key at-bat in the game came in the top of the ninth inning when the Blaze sent teenager Jorge Alejándrez to the plate against Black Cats hurler Nick Fowler. With the bases loaded and a whole stadium watching, the kid controlled his nerves and delivered huge, hitting a double off a 1-0 fastball to score 3.

"What a game," said Alejándrez. "We needed every last run."
