River Rats Take Tight Tilt
|
Columbia beat Walla Walla at Columbia Stadium, escaping with a 4-3 win. The win in large part was due to second baseman Richard Blackburn, who earned player of the game honors. He went 2 for 4 with 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs. The winner was Columbia reliever Martín Noriaga, now 1-0. The loser was Bennett Garland. Earning his 1st save for Columbia was Jim Unknown.
A key at-bat in the game came in the bottom of the third inning when the River Rats sent teenager Owen Cannon to the plate against Walleye hurler Bennett Garland. With runners on 1st and 2nd and a whole stadium watching, the kid controlled his nerves and delivered huge, hitting a single off a 1-1 fastball to score 1.
"I was able to barrel up some pitches," said Blackburn.
Columbia, now 8-5, has played well in the early going.
