Hammond pitcher José Díaz did his part in helping his team beat the Mt. Vernon Bulls, 4-3. The right-hander kept opposing batters in check throughout the game. The winning pitcher was Díaz, now 1-0. He tossed 6.2 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 5. Rob Rocha recorded the save for Hammond, his 1st of the season.

Hammond second baseman Alfonso Pérez helped the Herons go up, 3-1, in the bottom of the fourth inning. With the game tied, Pérez hit a 2-run home run off Mt. Vernon pitcher Adam Vaillancourt.

"Win or lose, we pick each other up in this clubhouse," Pérez told the Hammond Chronicle.

The win pushes Hammond to a record of 5-0.
