Highlanders Win in 13
|
Mercer Island got a terrific performance from pitcher Tomiji Saikawa, but it wasn't enough to beat the Asheville Highlanders. Asheville won the Mercer Island Grounds contest, 1-0. Saikawa was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 8 innings of shutout ball. Asheville reliever Justin Reynolds was credited with the win, to go to 2-4. Fernando Torrez took the loss for Mercer Island. With the win, the Highlanders improved to 19-35.
The most critical at-bat came in the top of the 13th inning. With two out, Carlos Rodríguez hit a first pitch fastball from Fernando Torrez for a run-scoring single. It put Asheville in front, 1-0.
Rodríguez told the Asheville Chronicle: "I don't feel you win baseball games by working harder than the other team or 'wanting it more.' You win just by scoring more runs."
