Grasshoppers Saddle Thunder Hawks with 5-1 Loss
|
The San Bernardino Grasshoppers picked up a win at Field of the Grasshoppers, knocking off the Ft. Polk South Thunder Hawks, 5-1. On the mound for San Bernardino was right-hander Manny Merico, who played a pivotal role in the win. Merico went 7.1 innings to notch the win. He scattered 5 hits, walked 4, and struck out 5. His record improves to 1-0. San Bernardino has a 3-game win streak, while Ft. Polk South has lost 4 in a row.
Tied up with the Thunder Hawks in the bottom of the sixth, the Grasshoppers got a boost from center fielder Homer Spence. With runners on 1st and 3rd, Spence saw a 1-1 fastball from Jason Hoskins and hit a run-scoring single to break the stalemate and put San Bernardino on top, 2-1.
"It's a mindset," said Merico. "Just trying to do your job, trying to be consistent."
