Deuces Come Up Short at Springfield
|
The Springfield Shooters topped the Virginia Beach Deuces, 7-1, with Tony Cantú playing a big role. Cantú was 2-2 with 2 singles and 2 walks, while scoring 2 times for the Shooters in the win. Chuck Steele earned the win to go to 1-0. He allowed 1 earned run on 5 hits, with 7 walks and 5 strikeouts. The win pushes Springfield to a record of 5-5.
A key at-bat in the game came in the bottom of the second inning when the Shooters sent teenager Roland Deschain to the plate against Deuces hurler Bradford Boddie. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and a whole stadium watching, the kid controlled his nerves and delivered huge, hitting a single off a full count circle change to score 2.
"Some wins are easy, some are difficult, but either way we come to the ballpark ready to work hard every day," Deschain told the Springfield News.
