Miners Stick Mermen with 4-3 Loss
|
Marquette starter Héctor Silva pitched effectively against the Myrtle Beach Mermen at Marquette Stadium. The right-hander led his team to a 4-3 win. Silva, now 10-4, was the winner. In 5.2 innings, he gave up 5 hits, while striking out 7, walking 3, and allowing 2 earned runs. Addick Lubbers got credit for the save for Marquette. It was his 14th of the year.
It could have been a different outcome for Marquette, had it not been for Greg Gross, the 22-year old center fielder . Gross contributed a 2-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning to put Marquette up, 4-1.
Gross told the Marquette Times: "This isn't football or hockey where you can overwhelm your opponents. Everyone gets 27 outs and we happened to make the most of them."
The second-place Miners improved to 60-39.
