Mermen Hold Off Miners, 7-5
|
Myrtle Beach beat Marquette at Marquette Stadium, escaping with a 7-5 win. The win in large part was due to first baseman Carlos Gómez, who earned player of the game honors. He went 3 for 5 with a double and 2 singles, while scoring 2 runs. Francisco Gonsáles notched his 31st save in 34 chances. The Mermen, at 58-39, sit in third place in the Silver AA.
Gómez came through with some timely hitting for Myrtle Beach. With the score 5-4 in the top of the sixth and two down, Gómez hit a first pitch fastball for a run-scoring double. It was his 7th double of the season -- and a big reason the Mermen managed to win.
"I've been criticized for being a slacker, but the one thing I do care about is winning," Gómez told the Myrtle Beach Gazette.
