Miners Get One-Run Win at Phoenix Hotspur
|
The Marquette Miners beat the Phoenix Hotspur Youth, 7-2, at Grenadiers Ballpark. The win was largely due to the efforts of third baseman Isaac Downey, who captured player of the game honors. He was 1-3 with a home run and 2 walks. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. Torvald Geertsen was the winning pitcher. Over 5.2 innings, he allowed 2 runs on 7 hits, with 3 walks and 1 strikeout. Mario Castillo earned his 1st save in 1 tries.
Also producing for Marquette was center fielder Greg Gross, who stroked a bases-clearing double in the top of the fourth. For the game, Gross was 1-5 with a double, while adding 3 RBI.
"I thought we played a nice game," Downey told the Marquette Times. "Good pitching, timely hitting, it was all there."
The 'W' lifts Marquette's record to 24-17.
