The Marquette Miners topped the Salem Misfits, 6-5, with Greg Gross playing a big role. Gross was 4-5 with 4 singles. He scored 2 runs for the Miners in the win. The winner was Torvald Geertsen, who threw 109 pitches over 7 innings. The right-hander was charged with 3 runs on 4 hits. Marquette, at 20-16, sits in 4th place in the Silver AA.
The Marquette win was a team effort. It included major contributions from, among others, Isaac Downey. In the top of the fifth, the Marquette third baseman came to bat and hit a 2-run double. It staked his team to a 4-2 lead.
In comments to the Marquette Times, Gross admitted that he doesn't always push himself. "But the results," he said, "speak for themselves."
