Cards Use Late-Game Magic to Beat Sheens
|
The Portland Cards beat the St Charles Sheens, 5-3, at The Kallipolis. The win was largely due to the efforts of shortstop Jesús Gutiérrez, who captured player of the game honors. He was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. The Cards are off to a tough start, getting just their 8th win in 32 games.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the bottom of the eighth, with the game tied, Joel Nelson was at the plate when Portland scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Cards to go in front, 4-3.
In postgame comments to the Portland Times, Gutiérrez said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
