Machine Fall Short at St. Louis
The St. Louis Browns topped the Chicago Machine, 5-4, in Continental League action at Gateway Stadium. The player of the game was St. Louis pitcher León Hernández. Reliever Huang Chen picked up the win. His record improves to 1-1. Juan Rodríguez took the loss. The Browns, now 20-9, have been on a roll in the early going.

The Browns were down to their final out when third baseman José Flores turned a first pitch slider from Juan Rodríguez into a 2-run double. The walk-off double made the Gateway Stadium crowd go wild.

"If we keep winning the close games," Flores said, "we'll be in good shape at the end."
