Newell belts 2 home runs, Stars Move to 8-5
|
The Springfield Stars bested the Austin River Sharks, 7-5, at Kekambas Park. Elliott Newell was named player of the game. He hit 2 home runs, while adding 5 RBI and scoring twice. Springfield reliever Luis Cortéz picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. José Pérez was saddled with the loss. The save went to José Valdéz, his 4th this season.
Newell contributed a big hit, a 2-run home run, for Springfield in the bottom of the first. With his team trailing 2-1, Newell took a slider from José Pérez and stroked the home run to right. His 4th home run of the season allowed the Stars to leap in front, 3-2.
"We take it day by day here," said Newell, "and today was a good one for us."
With their winning streak at 4, the Stars have raced to a strong start this season.
