Pikes Score Late, Upend Stars, 5-4
|
Fans who gathered at Kekambas Park saw a good contest between the Seattle Pikes and Springfield Stars.
Springfield got a terrific performance from pitcher Rien Middelkamp, but it wasn't enough to beat the Seattle Pikes. Seattle won the Kekambas Park contest, 5-4. Middelkamp was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 7 innings of 5-hit ball. Seattle reliever Jesús Martínez was the winner. His record is now 2-8. The losing pitcher was José Valdéz.
Had Javier Martínez not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Martínez hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Pikes.
"We'll savor this win," Martínez told the Seattle News, "then get ready for the next game."
The Pikes raised their record to 33-64.
