Victory Over Machine Takes St. Louis to 96-62
|
The Chicago Machine got a superb performance from catcher Doug Stephens. Still, it wasn't enough to beat St. Louis. The Browns won the game, 7-3. In spite of the loss, Stephens was named the player of the game. He went 2 for 2 with a home run, a double, and 2 walks, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Bernardo Miranda, the winner, improved to 17-7. He held the Machine to 3 earned runs on 6 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 4 and walking 1. The first-place Browns, at 96-62, now lead their division by 6½ games.
The Browns got a big at-bat from catcher Felipe Rodríguez. For the game, Rodríguez was 2-4 with 2 doubles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the fourth, with the bases loaded, he stroked a bases-clearing double. His 11th double of the season gave St. Louis a 3-2 lead.
"Winning the game is always the first objective," Rodríguez said.
