Athletics Come Back Late to Top Noise | The Philadelphia Athletics overcame a good performance by Nevada center fielder Luis Cruz to knock off Nevada, 9-6, at Branda's Palace. Cruz went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. Philadelphia reliever Luke Brown picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Luis Cortéz shouldered the loss. Esteban Juárez got the save, his 22nd in 27 chances.
Had Anastasio Villa not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Villa hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 7-6, in favor of the Athletics.
"Enjoyed this one," Villa told the Philadelphia Gazette. "But it's back to work tomorrow."
Nevada has now lost 5 in a row.
