Athletics Use Late-Game Magic to Beat Gang Green
The Philadelphia Athletics picked up a win at The Ballpark at Irvine, knocking off the Irvine Gang Green, 2-0. On the mound for Philadelphia was left-hander Keith Swanson, who played a pivotal role in the win. Swanson, now 5-8, was the winner. In 8.1 innings, he gave up 5 hits, while striking out 1, walking 2, and allowing no earned runs. The last-place Athletics raised their record to 38-68.

Had Héctor Padilla not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases empty, Padilla hit a solo home run. That made the score 1-0, in favor of the Athletics.

"A great team win and something real positive we can build on," said Padilla after the game.
