Knights Win at Portland, 5-3
|
The New York Knights faced a tough opponent in Portland pitcher Nelson Ortega, but did just enough to pull out the victory at The Kallipolis by a final score of 5-3. Ortega went 6.1 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. Thatcher Smith got the win, improving to 1-0. He pitched 6.2 innings, giving up 7 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 5 and walking 2. Paco Ruíz earned the save for New York, his 2nd of the year.
It could have been a different outcome for New York, had it not been for Warren Potter, the two-time Gold Glove Award winner . Potter contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put New York up, 5-3.
"We did enough to win," said Potter.
The Knights, now 5-1, have been on a roll in the early going.
