The Birmingham Steeldogs clobbered the Austin River Sharks, 12-1, at The Ballpark at Sloss Furnace today. Birmingham first baseman Carlos García was named player of the game for his productive day. He went 2 for 2 with a double and 2 walks, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 2. Francisco Ríos got the win, improving to 2-2. He held the River Sharks to 1 earned run on 4 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 4 and walking 1. Austin, at 8-21, are off to an ugly start.

Also pitching in was Birmingham catcher Valentín Borges, who hammered a grand slam home run in the bottom of the seventh. For the game, Borges was 2-4 with a home run and a walk, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once.

Austin manager Dave Anderson was on the defensive afterward. "You can go back and make us look as bad as you want to," he told a reporter, "and then I can throw more numbers at you and make us look better."
