No Recovery For Smashers Mendoza, Setback Forces Him Out Monday, August 24th, 2026 San Diego starting pitcher Juan Mendoza has been diagnosed with a sore shoulder, an injury so severe that will end his baseball career. "It's very disappointing," Mendoza told reporters today. "It was totally unexpected, which makes it a little bit harder to deal with." Doctors originally thought he would have a full recovery. The 22-year-old Mendoza has been in treatment and reported he was making great progress, when things suddenly went sour. He told BNN, "It went from good to bad ... and then finally, to the worst case -- doctors said my career is over." To date this season Mendoza has compiled a 3-3 record with a 3.61 ERA in 13 starts. |
