The Rio Grande clubhouse staff referred to him as "the kid" this season. Next year Gene O'Neal will have to have a new nickname. He earned it after winning the 2024 Eastern League Outstanding Pitcher Award.
O'Neal made 33 starts this year, winning 20 and losing 9. He threw 212 innings, fanned 180, allowed 177 hits and 70 walks, while holding opposing teams to a .225 average as he logged an impressive 2.76 ERA.
Lorenzo Aguilar of the Rio Grande Rattlesnake finished second in voting, while Nathan Seymour of the Reading Rainbows finished third.
