Caterpillars Fall Short at Mt. Vernon
|
The Mt. Vernon Bulls did just enough to secure a 4-3 victory over the Grand Forks Caterpillars at Ballpark of Mt. Vernon. Nobody did more than pitcher Andrew Valdés, who captured player of the game honors. Valdés went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 8. His record improves to 1-1. Curt Orser finished to wrap up his 8th save.
Had Jesse Francis not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Francis hit a 2-run double. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Bulls.
"We squandered some opportunities," said Grand Forks manager Chris Johnson.
Mt. Vernon is now 40-47, Grand Forks 50-37.
