Tukufu Slugs Herons to 5-3 Win
|
The Hammond Herons bested the Washington Generals, 5-3, at The Heron Refuge. Berihun Tukufu was named player of the game. He went 2-3 with 2 home runs and a walk. He scored 3 times and drove in 3. Bob Kennedy got credit for the win, improving to 2-0. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 2 innings. Even with the win, the Herons have a dismal 17-54 record.
In the bottom of the 7th, pinch hitter Marvin Overbeek gave Hammond the lead when he hit a 2-run single. The Herons had been trailing 3-2, but the two-out single off Washington pitcher Jeff Rollins changed that -- and Hammond went on to win.
"We'll pop the top on a cold one and get back to work tomorrow," Overbeek said.
