Asheville Highlanders starter Fernando Varela pitched a strong game against the Mercer Island Screaming Eagles at Asheville Park, leading the Highlanders to a 6-3 win. Joe Khokar picked up the save, his 3rd. At 8-17, Asheville is in last place in the Premier AA.

Jeff Lowe helped out the Asheville cause in the bottom of the fifth inning with a 2-run double. For the game, the catcher went 3 for 4 with 3 doubles. He drove in 3 runs.
