Cattlemen Come Up Short at Portland
The Portland Evergreens knocked off the Ft. Worth Cattlemen, 7-6, at Evergreen Park. Willie McGirt, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason Portland won. The center fielder was 3-3 with a double and 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Ricardo Gómez, credited with the win, is now 1-2. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 2.1 innings. The Evergreens own a robust 77-31 mark.

Had Chris Payling not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Payling hit a run-scoring double. That made the score 7-6, in favor of the Evergreens.

"It was a nice win for our side today," said Evergreens manager Imran Baig. "Not perfect, but we'll take it."
