Grafton Middies starter António Marés pitched a strong game against the Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids at Atlantica, leading the Middies to a 5-2 win. The winning pitcher was Marés, now 3-4. He tossed 7.1 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 2 and fanning 7. Lynwood Matos closed it out for his 18th save.

Tied up with the Rainbow Mermaids in the top of the fifth, the Middies got a boost from designated hitter Lúcio López. With runners on 1st and 2nd, López saw a 0-2 changeup from Ángel Navarro and hit a 2-run double to break the stalemate and put Grafton on top, 2-0.

"That's the key at this level, throwing strike one," said Marés. "Successful pitchers do it."

Northern Virginia has now lost 4 in a row.
