With right fielder Zeus Preckwinkle leading the charge, the Hammond Herons defeated the Highwood Hawks, 7-3, at Hawks Field. Preckwinkle, who is tied for 4th in the 3A in extra base hits with 22, went 2-5 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. Kanakanui Lokomaikainani got the win, improving to 3-1. He pitched 7.1 innings, giving up 8 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 3 and walking 3. Hammond now sits at 38-27, while Highwood falls to 42-23.
Tamarac, Florida-born Dewitt Hopper came through in the clutch. In the top of the third, with the bases loaded and the Herons trailing 2-0, he hit a bases-clearing double to right to put Hammond on top.
"We played a good game and came out on top," said Preckwinkle.
