Starting pitcher Alberto Mendoza pitched well enough to help the Hammond Herons beat the Grim Reapers by the score of 9-5. Mendoza went 7.1 innings to notch the win. He scattered 8 hits, walked 4, and struck out 8. His record improves to 10-5. Esteban Jiménez nailed down his 16th save.
Also contributing to the win was center fielder Jay Hood, who stroked a 2-run single in the top of the fifth for Hammond. For the game, Hood was 2 for 5 with 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs.
In comments to the Hammond Chronicle, Hood admitted that he doesn't always push himself. "But the results," he said, "speak for themselves."
The Herons saw their win-loss record go to 60-30. At the same time, the Reapers fall to 46-44.
