Loons Continue Hot Start to Season with Win
Asheville designated hitter Paco Vásquez had a terrific game. He was 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Minnesota beat the Highlanders, 7-6. Vásquez was named the player of the game despite the loss. The winner was Héctor Cortéz, who threw 96 pitches over 6 innings. The left-hander was charged with 5 runs on 9 hits. Jim Unknown earned the save for Minnesota, his 1st of the year.

A key at-bat in the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Loons sent teenager Salvador Esparza to the plate against Highlanders hurler Tom Hernández. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and a whole stadium watching, the kid controlled his nerves and delivered huge, hitting a single off a 0-1 fastball to score 2.

"We'll take this win and move on," said Esparza.

Minnesota, now 8-4, has played well in the early going.
