Mountaineers Down Frenzy, 5-4
|
The Mountaineers grabbed a win, 5-4, at Edmund Fitzgerald Field, overcoming a fine effort from Niagara Falls pitcher Stan Stewart. Stewart went 5 innings and allowed no earned runs. Yong-hoon Park, who went 7 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 3 runs on 7 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 6. His record now stands at 1-1. Picking up the save was Rafael López, his 1st.
The Mountaineers beat the Frenzy in part due to timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out double Pedro Gonzáles produced in the top of the third. Batting against Niagara Falls pitcher George Nelson, Gonzáles gave his team a 3-1 lead when he hit a 2-run double.
"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Gonzáles told a Beech Mountain Observer reporter. "Sometimes we need just to relax."
Beech Mountain has a mark of 8-10 after the win.
