Rebels Use Late-Game Magic to Beat Steeldogs

A nice crowd turned out to see the Boston Rebels and Birmingham Steeldogs clash at The Ballpark at Sloss Furnace.
Birmingham catcher Valentín Borges was sensational. He was 3-3 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk, but it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. Boston beat the Steeldogs, 7-5. Borges was named the player of the game despite the loss. The win was credited to Carlos Ruíz in relief. His record improves to 6-1. Ken Lyons took the loss. Tony Rocha nailed down his 18th save.
The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Aaron Washington came to bat in the top of the eighth. Facing Birmingham pitcher Ken Lyons, he hit a 0-2 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Boston on top, 6-5.
"It wasn't our best performance," said Washington, "but a win in this league is nothing to sniff at."
The last-place Rebels raised their record to 30-69.
